Click to enlargeWhat Happened to His Meow?

Dear Dr. Margaret:

We have a 16-pound, male fire tip that is 3 years old and just recently, when he opens his mouth to meow nothing comes out. This is very unusual because Sammy, his name, is a very vocal cat. Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Barry Guinn

Dear Barry,

Decrease or loss of vocalization in cats is sometimes associated with recovery from or affliction with upper respiratory infections, oral infections, neurological strain to the vocal cords due to associated growths, lesions (nasopharayngeal polyps) or exhaustion from recent over-vocalization. (Intact males may try to serenade their sweethearts).

If there are no apparent signs of illness or infirmity exhaust, one might permit Sammy a few days of restful observation.

Should Sammy's meow not promptly return, he should be examined by your veterinarian to rule out the previously described conditions. It may also be prudent to soften his food, if dry kibble is his mainstay as it may irritate his throat.
