The Best Ways to Handle Pet Allergies

mug and tissues

Sometimes owning a cat or dog comes with a few negative aspects. You may know you have some pet allergies when you bring your cat or dog home, or it may be an unpleasant surprise that you need to deal with. Either way, if you’re one of more than 60 million affected by allergies in general, and your symptoms always seem to increase when your furry friend is around, you’ll want to do something about it. Here’s look at our top tips.

Clean surfaces
Cleaning your home is essential to dealing with pet allergies. Our top advice is to get a top-rated vacuum for pet hair. A vacuum like this will remove the hair, dust, and dander that is often associated with many pet breeds. A vacuum with a good HEPA filter will likely be helpful to ensure that all the particles you don’t want in the air are trapped away for good.

If you don’t have the time or ability to clean yourself, consider getting a green house cleaning service that will use products that are safe for you and your pets.

Clean out vents
Regardless of how long you’ve had your pet, there is likely a buildup of dust and allergens in your vents. Cleaning your dryer and air duct vents will help reduce pet hair, dust mites, and all the other things that may be playing havoc with your ability to breathe.

Change Filters
Your heating and air conditioning unit likely came with a filter to catch allergens and dirt. A great first line of defense against allergens is to make sure that these filters get changed regularly. Each system and filter works for a different amount of time, so know the ideal schedule for changing the filter in your home.

washing hands

Wash your hands and your pet
When you pet your dog or cat, make sure to wash your hands as soon as your can. Keeping your hands clean will help ensure that you don’t inadvertently transfer more pet hair and dander to your face. Additionally, keeping pets well-brushed, washed, and groomed means that you’ll have less in your house to clean up.

Dedicate pet areas
One way to limit the spread of pet hair and pet dander is to limit the areas of your home that are open to your pets. For instance, consider keeping your pets out of your bedroom or off of furniture. This will decrease the spaces you have to clean regularly and give you an area where you can be in your home without having to worry about allergens.

Treat the symptoms
Ideally, the other steps you take to control dust, pet hair, and pet dander in your home will be enough. However, if you’re still experiencing symptoms, there are many allergy medications available by prescription or over-the-counter that can make your pet allergies easier to manage. Ensure that you get a medication suited to your particular situation.

Merry Christmas

Merry Christmas, all! Christmas is just a few short days away, which means everyone at our house is pretty excited. The shopping and meal planning have kicked completely into high gear, and things are a little harried as we get ready for the holiday.

For us, Christmas is about family and togetherness. We always gather at my mom’s house and cook a big family dinner for the occasion. Last year 15 people attended, but this year will be a record-setting 20. I’m not quite sure how we’ll get it all done, but I’m sure well.

Without fail, the kids will love a handful of their gifts, but we leave the big magic up to the Man himself, Saint Nick. Whether it’s candy canes in their stockings or more extravagant gifts under the tree, we try to focus on the importance of the Christmas Spirit and being together over and above all the stuff. My cat Oscar will also gets in on the festivities, but, as every cat owner knows, the empty boxes and clumps of wrapping paper are the best toys available, even when you spend money on more fancy cat items.

No matter what shape or size your family Christmas takes this year, we wish you the best of everything. Merry Christmas and a happy New Year!

How to Litter Box Train a Cat

cat on tree

Taking care of or adopting your cat can be one of the most rewarding experiences that an individual can go through. Kittens are soft, super playful, and fiercely loyal as long as they are treated well and are loved. Although owning a cat is simply a dream, it comes with certain disadvantages such as dealing with the occasional hairball, the constant and endless meows for attention especially at night and, of course, cat poop.

Fortunately, cats are very clean, and if you adopt a cat from her mother, the chances are high that your kitten will already have learned how and where to use the box from her mother before she or he comes to live with you. However, you might still have to train your cat with a large enough litter box that can allow your cat to move around as they handle their business.

Remember that the first few days of training your cat are bound to be characterized by accidents. Whatever you do, avoid punishing your cat and instead continue to train her to use her box. Once she uses it correctly for the first time once or twice, reward her with a kitty treat and she will be on track before you know it. Please note that training can happen so instantly that the casual observer may not be aware that any active training has taken place. However, some cats do take a little longer especially if they were taken from mom before 4 weeks of age.

kitten and litterbox

Getting started
As a general guideline, have an extra litter box for every cat that you have. So if you have one cat, make sure to add an extra box for accessibility. Show your kitten where the box is located as soon as you get her and place her there regularly after meals. If you observe her sniffing around or crouching, that is an indicator that she needs to go. Ensure that you:

  • Place the litter box in a quiet and undisturbed location away. Cats like privacy so ensure that the space you pick is comfortable and away from her bed or the spot that she eats her food.
  • Empty the tray on a regular basis because your kitten will not want to use it if it is messy or stinky.
  • Scoop out your box daily to avoid odor and change the litter as regularly as needed.
  • Avoid using disinfectants and bleach to clean your little box. Some cleaning agents contain harmful substances that are harmful to cats so you should stick to water and regular dish shop.
  • Do not clean your box if you are pregnant. If you are pregnant, make sure that you get someone else to clean the box or use rubber gloves and wash your hands thoroughly afterward.

What if your kitten won’t use the box?
If you are still experiencing difficulties with training, try and make your box as attractive to the cat as possible. Consider changing the type of litter that you use, cleaning the box more frequently, or moving it to another quieter area. Please remember that if you got your cat from the outdoors, training may take longer because it could be a while before the cat gets used to it.
